MEASUREMENT OF SOIL SUCTION USING THE FILTER PAPER METHOD

The filter paper method is a well established method for measuring soil suction. It has not been highly regarded in the past due to criticisms concerning the accuracy, laboratory procedure and the range of the method. This paper presents a case of the use of the filter paper technique as a preferred method for soil suction determination. The benefits of this method include greatly reduced costs and testing time, good accuracy and acceptable range of measurement. Experiments to determine the equilibration time as a function of specimen suction are presented as well as standard laboratory procedures used to measure both total and matric suction.
