An experimental method has been developed in Gifu University to estimate permeability of partially saturated soil. The apparatus is specified by the steady state condition of water movement, the control of water saturation due to air pressure which is applied to the sample through small holes of the soil container, measurement of water head at both ends of the sample instead of the inside and the use of glass or ceramic filter to prevent air entry into the sample. The paper deals with the theoretical background of the equipment and its applications to the measurement of permeability in a sandy soil. Emphasis is on the exact values of permeability relating to saturation as well as the water retention characteristics of the soil independently on the location, size of the holes and the height of the sample.
