PORE PRESSURE DEVELOPMENT IN COMPACTED WET CLAYEY SOILS; AN APPROACH USING SIMPLE LABORATORY TESTS

The compaction of wet clayey soils leads sometimes to high pore pressures in earth dams. The evaluation of these pressures has been carried out with the conventional equipment of a soil mechanics laboratory; thus, undrained isotropic compression tests as well as triaxial tests with simple stress paths representative of field conditions have been carried out on several types of unsaturated wet clayey soils. The results have been compared to field measurements in earth dams. This approach gives the designer some simple tools which allow evaluation of pore pressures; in addition this study has enabled an analysis of the influence of the water content and the degree of saturation on pore pressure development.
