STIFFNESS MEASUREMENTS ON AN UNSATURATED HIGH PLASTICITY CLAY USING BENDER ELEMENTS

This paper describes the results of a series of bender element tests carried out on statically compacted high plasticity London Clay. Four specimens were compacted at different initial water contents and void ratios and subsequently allowed to dry gradually until air-dry. Measurements of shear modulus (using bender elements) and matrix suction (using the filter paper technique), together with water content and void ratio, were made at various stages during the drying process.
