IN SITU PERMEABILITY TESTING OF PARTIALLY SATURATED SOILS USING A SEALED DOUBLE RING INFILTROMETER

Initial experience is discussed relating to the practical aspects of in-situ infiltration testing for two partially saturated soils. The construction of test beds from bulk soil samples is described, along with details of a hydraulic disc piezometer monitoring system and the use of ring infiltrometers. Further discussion relates to the design, installation and use of a sealed double ring infiltrometer. The paper offers guidance on the use of such equipment to determine in situ infiltration on materials of low permeability, with reference to the experience gained from the design and validation stage of the field study.
