PREDICTION OF UNSATURATED HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY USING MICRO-LYSIMETERS

Laboratory tests using micro-lysimeters were carried out to observe the impact of different drying cycles upon compacted samples of Glenmore clay and Wallacia ripped sandstone. A simple analysis of the first and second stages of evaporation was used to estimate soil water diffusivity and hence, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of these soils. The results show that the micro-lysimeters can accurately predict the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity of these soils. Particular advantages of the method are its test conditions and test duration.
