A TECHNIQUE FOR THE RAPID DETERMINATION OF THE MOISTURE RETENTION RELATIONSHIP AND HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY OF UNSATURATED SOILS

A modified technique for determination of the water retention curve and hydraulic conductivity of an unsaturated soil is described. The new technique allows the determination of these parameters much more rapidly than is possible with conventional techniques such as the pressure plate apparatus. The full moisture retention and hydraulic conductivity - moisture content curves may be determined in 4-6 days, compared with 2-3 weeks previously. An added advantage is that overall volume change of the soil specimen may be measured, and not merely inferred from measurements of moisture outflow. Greater accuracy in the determination of the moisture retention curve was thus obtained. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 881647.
