WATER-AIR PERMEABILITIES OF UNSATURATED SOILS

The paper presents the results of water and air permeability measurements, on drying and wetting paths, on 3 partially saturated remoulded materials: a clay-sand mixture, a fine sand and a natural loam. The tests were made by means of a new device developed at the Ecole Centrale de Paris in the last years, based on the axis translation (air pressure) technique. The water permeabilities are compared with those derived from the drying-wetting curve using Van Genuchten's model. A classification of the relative permeabilities curves of soils according to their characteristic grain diameter is highlighted, as well as the correspondence with the drying-wetting paths.
