STABILITY ANALYSIS OF UNSATURATED SLOPES CONSIDERING CHANGES OF MATRIC SUCTION

Presented is a new FORTRAN program uniting: (1) a finite element program for the saturated-unsaturated seepage analysis; and (2) a Rigid-Body-Spring-Model program for the slope stability analysis. The new program can predict the change of the safety factor of unsaturated slopes considering the reduction of shear strengths of soils due to rain infiltration. Calculation results show that the reduction of safety factors depends naturally on the variation with the matric suction, the intensity and duration of rain. Furthermore, the unsaturated property of the soils, ie the relation between the matric suction and the water content affects the reduction behavior of the safety factor of slopes.
