STRESS INDUCED CHANGES OF HYDRAULIC PROPERTIES IN SOILS

Stress induced changes of the hydraulic properties in soils (either structured or homogenized) can be parametrized by the van Genuchten parameters. The parameters are reduced while the n values increase or decrease with increased mechanical stress at a given initial bulk density. A greater bulk density is linked with smaller changes of these parameters. However, these data are only valid if the negative pore water pressure value applied is smaller then the mechanical stress, while exceeding this value induces a further normal shrinkage process dependent on particle and pore size distribution.
