DIRECT SHEAR TESTING ON AN UNSATURATED SOIL FROM RIO DE JANEIRO

This paper describes main characteristics of a direct shear device, developed for the study of shearing strength changes in residual soils under suction control. Partial results of tests performed on soaked and unsaturated samples of colluvial and residual materials from a large landslide site in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, are presented. Based on the results, a general criterion to define failure strength in soils showing changes from a strain-hardening to strain softening behaviour is described.
