EXPERIMENTAL BEHAVIOUR OF HIGHLY EXPANSIVE DOUBLE-STRUCTURE CLAY

The macroscopic behaviour of unsaturated expansive clays is properly analyzed by a two level structure: microstructure and macrostructure. To illustrate the influence of each level in natural or compacted clays ideal samples have been tested in the laboratory. These ideal samples have been made by high density pellets of clay powder. The pellets simulate the particle arrangements observed in clay soils. Some interesting deformation features have been revealed in the experimental work. The paper describes the influence of dry density, applied pressure and suction change on the tendency of the clay to deform volumetrically in wetting and wetting-drying cycles under suction control.
