DESIGN OF ROLL-OVER PROTECTIVE STRUCTURE FOR A FOUR WHEEL DRIVE TERRAIN VEHICLE
The design, manufacture and installation of a cost-effective add-on roll-over protection bar was commissioned by the Australian Army in 1990 for a fleet of four wheel drive (4WD) terrain vehicles. The results indicated the vehicle cabin could not sustain its unloaded mass in any roll-over event. The design process and numerical modelling carried out to ascertain the add-on roll-bar's capacity according to the owner's peak load criteria are described in this paper. Whilst the article focuses on some of the technical aspects of the add-on roll-bar design, a number of questions regarding legal issues are raised towards the end of the paper.
