HIGH-STRENGTH AND HIGH-PERFORMANCE CONCRETE IN KOREA
Recent developments concerning research on and application of high-strength, high-performance concrete in Korea are reported in this paper. In 1990, the Department of Construction initiated the building of 2 million housing units in five new satellite cities around Seoul and mandated some taller buildings to properly shape the skylines of the new satellite cities. Since this project requires apartment buildings up to 30 stories high, the technical necessity of using high-strength, high-performance concrete suddenly draws attention. In 1994, the Department of Construction initiated two research projects for a two-year period as the first phase of a research program. One of the projects is on improving concrete performance. Concrete performance is further divided into three groups: high strength concrete, durable concrete and flowing concrete.
