SAFETY ANALYSIS OF SUSPENSION-BRIDGE CABLES: WILLIAMSBURG BRIDGE. DISCUSSION AND CLOSURE

A discussion of a paper with the aforementioned title by Matteo, Deodatis, and Billington, published in this journal (Volume 120, Number 11, November 1994), is presented. Discussion begins with the size of the data set--Stahl states that the data set is too small to draw conclusions with reasonable accuracy about the safety of the main suspension cable. The discusser also believes the tensile strength value to be inflated based on mean value instead of lowest test value. Discusser Stahl mentions that further inaccuracy is introduced by basing tensile strength on the nominal wire diameter, rather than measured diameter. To conclude, Stahl points out an absence of clamping at the sidespans. Discussion is followed by closure from the authors.
