THE CASE FOR RECYCLING MAGNETIC STRIPE TICKETS

Public transit systems throughout the world use tickets to control access and ensure the proper payment of fares. With the need to save labor and to control and reduce costs, transit operators have introduced automated fare collection with machine-readable tickets. Magnetic stripe technology was commonly adopted to carry information on tickets. This paper looks at the experience from Hong Kong and Singapore where they recycle plastic magnetic stripe tickets both within the systems and by passengers. Apart from substantial savings in costs, recycling magnetic tickets also brings environmental benefits as it greatly reduces the amount of toxic material that needs disposing.
