RESEARCH AND EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE OF RAIL TRANSPORT

A successful railway operation is founded on the optimal integration of the skills of people, the capabilities of computer systems and best practice management approaches, as well as the most effective use of both existing and emerging technologies. This article outlines some of the key issues in advancing the cause of railways and introduces a new partnership between the academic sector and a railway operator. Some of the topics include: benefits, managing and financing rail projects, affordable rail vehicles, crashworthiness, low cost infrastructure, telematics and train control, rail systems engineer, and railway engineering education.
