COMPARISON OF THE SUPERPAVE GYRATORY COMPACTOR TO THE MARSHALL FOR FIELD QUALITY CONTROL (WITH DISCUSSION)
This report covers the evaluation of five different asphalt mixes produced at five different asphalt mix plants. Two mixes were designed using the Superpave Level I procedures. Three of the mixes were designed using the Automatic Marshall compactor. The original mix designs were performed by the State highway agency or independent testing laboratories. For each mix, samples of aggregate and binder were obtained from the plant site, prepared in the FHWA Office of Technology Applications mobile laboratory, and compacted in both the Superpave Gyratory and the Automatic Marshall compactor. These results were used to establish the mix design values in this report.
