PREDICTION OF ASPHALT PAVEMENT STRUCTURAL LAYER MODULI USING OPTIMIZED FWD CONFIGURATION (WITH DISCUSSION)

The objectives of this research were: (1) to develop and evaluate a set of prediction equations to determine pavement layer moduli directly (without using backcalculation) from dual-load Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) measurements; (2) to develop a set of prediction equations to determine pavement layer moduli directly from conventional single-load FWD measurements using a modified sensor configuration; and (3) to conduct a limited number of field tests using the conventional single-load FWD with modified sensors to evaluate the effectiveness of the predictive equations in the field. Successful development and evaluation of these equations would illustrate the viability of using modified load and deflection sensor configurations for evaluation and analysis of flexible pavement systems. The key factor is to achieve deflection measurements that provide greater sensitivity to changes in pavement structure, thereby enhancing our ability to evaluate layer moduli by analytical methods.
