SPEECH TO THE ITS AMERICA/NHTSA PEER REVIEW WORKSHOP

In this speech, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Administrator welcomes workshop participants, briefly reviews the road NHTSA has taken to improve highway safety, and discusses NHTSA's involvement in the Department of Transportation's Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) program, which is centered on development of collision avoidance systems. He discusses in further detail the four parts of the collision avoidance system development program, which are (1) a comprehensive crash data assessment, (2) establishment of performance specifications that specify the technical attributes for these systems, (3) production-feasibility demonstration, and (4) assessment of benefits that are provided to the driving public by ITS collision avoidance systems.
