PERFORMANCE AND EFFECTIVENESS OF OMNI-DIRECTIONAL STERN DRIVE TUGS

For the purpose of tug force simulation, a mathematical model has been developed which has been used to generate performance envelopes for a typical Australian omni-directional stern drive tug for various modes of operation. In addition to force prediction, the model has been used to examine the static stability (position keeping ability) of the tug engaged in the towing operation. Force predictions have then been used to investigate the effect various tug deployments have on ship manoeuvring in confined waters, assuming quasi steady conditions.
