A STUDY ON A COLLISION AVOIDANCE EXPERT SYSTEM FOR DECISION- MAKING SUPPORT IN I.N.S

An Integrated Navigation System (INS) is expected to improve both navigational safety and operational efficiency. The authors have proposed a support system for collision avoidance in INS and have also developed a collision avoidance expert system which proposes the collision avoidance action considering the prediction of the target ship's action, traffic rules and navigator practices. This paper gives the results of some experiments on the intelligent support of decision making in INS conducted with a ship manoeuvring simulator equipped with INS and a collision avoidance expert system. The conclusions are: 1) the analysis of the situation is improved when the navigator uses the prediction of the target ship action provided by the expert system, it is especially efficient during a multi-encounter situation in congested water and an encounter situation in a curved channel; 2) the combination of the safety evaluation method used in INS and the collision avoidance expert system assures proper decision-making and reduces the complexity of the decision-making during collision avoidance; 3) the investigation shows that improvement of the safety of navigation will follow the development of the intelligent decision-making support system.
