There is nothing new about standard designs for ships, but this paper describes a completely new approach to the idea. A powerful computer program and co-operation with the naval architect, the steel fabricator and British Steel have produced a method claimed to reduce construction time and costs. This new computer based construction system allows the advanced construction and fabrication techniques used by large shipyards to be employed by smaller shipyards.
