IS THERE AN SRB IN YOUR TANK?
A particularly virulent form of anaerobic bacteria is sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) which produces corrosive sulphide. When exposed metal surfaces are attacked by SRB, severe pitting corrosion has occurred, in some cases penetrating ship's hulls and tank bottoms. The article discusses corrosion of ballast tanks due to SRB and how it can be avoided.
