A new two-stage multipurpose screw propeller is described. The stern stage of this propeller can operate both as an active and passive unit. The navigation conditions such as full speed, slow and extremely slow speed, emergency speed and manoeuvring are also described. It is concluded that this new propeller design has advantages over conventional propellers from an energy saving and navigation safety point of view. The results of the propeller hydrodynamic efficiency analysis for slow and full speed modes of operation, performed for a medium size trawler, are also presented.
