COMBINED LOW-EMISSION SHIP PROPULSION UNITS PROJECT SEEKS PROMISING SOLUTIONS

A joint research project in Germany is examining methods of cutting exhaust gas emissions from ships' diesel engines. The research consortium's goal is to drastically sink the visible emission of soot and particles in exhaust gas under all operational conditions. In addition, the project will aim to achieve a 50% cut in nitric monoxide emissions in exhaust gas from large size ships' diesels through internal engine modifications, and a 95% cut with the assistance of follow-on external catalytic converter equipment - without an increase in fuel consumption.
