This paper outlines some of the main steps in the concept design of 'ship-shaped' FPSOs and discusses the issues that the designer must address in order to arrive at an economic and workable solution. Optimal FPSO design aims at the creation of a safe and reliable system which will deliver the best possible return on capital invested, and the paper discusses methods for the comparison of the overall operational performance of FPSOs when they are still on the drawing board in order to avoid costly changes at later stages in the development of the project.
