A CONTRIBUTION TO THE RESEARCH INTO NUMERICAL CALCULATION OF WAVE FORCES AFFECTING A VESSEL

It is important to define as accurately as possible the impact of wave forces on ships. A large number of empirical expressions of derived equations exist which permit the calculation of wave energy. However, derived equations include certain empirical data that can influence the accuracy of computation. It has been observed that calculation relying on data available results in excessively high forces due to the waves pounding against the ship's side. These appear to be particularly pronounced in case of berthing/unberthing manoeuvres when small-sized waves act on the vessel. The term 'small-sized' as used in this paper, refers to those waves which do not cause ship rolling. With regard to the inconsistent data available, the authors have elaborated a structural analysis of wave effects on a vessel and give expressions enabling the computation of mean resultant value of forces acting on a ship hull side due to small-sized waves.
