THE CRUSHING MECHANICS OF BOW STRUCTURE AND ITS OPTIMAL DESIGN AGAINST HEAD ON COLLISION

Yang and Caldwell's technique of deriving a simplified equation of mean collapse force is improved and applied to ship bow structures. The collapse modes are chosen so that the collapse force becomes minimum, while maintaining the consistency between elements. The method is verified by finite element analysis and experimental data by Nagasawa et al. Good agreements with this simplified equation are observed. Based on this simplified crushing model. the optimal design of a ship bow structure against head on collision was carried out.
