The paper describes a computerized ship design system which could be usefully employed during basic design stages. The system consists of database system, modelling system, application programs, and user interface. The database system consists of a relational database management system and a database for design information. The modelling system handles data structure and procedure for geometric model. Application programs perform basic design tasks. A graphical user interface using OSF/Motif is adopted to give a convenient system environment. The developed system is independent of hardware and can therefore be implemented on various workstations such as SUN SPARC, DEC, HP, and VAX.
