TERZAGHI'S INVERTED FILTER--AN IMPORTANT TOOL FOR THE CIVIL ENGINEER

The inverted filter concept was invented by Karl Terzaghi to prevent dams from failing by water piping through the foundation. Laboratory and field testing have refined the necessary specifications and shown that this filter can form the basis for long-lasting erosion protection against stream erosion. Possible use to preserve the load-bearing capacity of railroad, highway, and airport runway subgrades is indicated. Other valuable applications should be found as engineers and aggregate suppliers become familiar with the basically simple requirements and the reasons for using them.
