The International Standards Organization's ISO/TC 67 deals with standardisation of Equipment for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries. Within this standardization programme, the existing certification systems in ISO were investigated regarding their suitability for application in the petroleum and natural gas industries. ISO/TC 67 created WG2 (certification principles) who's task it was to study the topic and make recommendations to the ISO/TC 67. The outcome was that a coherent set of standards is currently under development. In the course of this work it emerged that certification cannot be seen in isolation since the topic design plays a key role within the certification process. As a results ISO/TC 67 created WG3 (design principles) with the task to study the topic of design and provide ISO/TC 67 with recommendations at the 1994 meeting in Japan. The paper provides an insight into the certification system as well as its link with design. It explains how the total process fits in the business structure of the petroleum and natural gas industry. The paper also addresses the topic of design principles based on the results of the study performed for ISO/TC 67.
