DEVELOPMENT OF A METHOD FOR DETERMINATION OF BEARING CAPACITY OF FORMATION

According to the new Swedish road construction code, checking and documentation of compaction and bearing strength of each course in a road pavement are more strictly specified. This report presents a method for determination of the bearing strength of the formation. It should be cheaper and more flexible than equipment used at present. The new code specifies static plate loading, but other methods can be used if equivalent results are produced. A falling weight deflectometer, Loadman, is studied and compared with static plate loading tests. The equipment consists of an enclosed 132 mm diameter aluminium tube weighing 16 kg. Loadman is half as expensive to buy as the plate loading apparatus, and measurements can be made 3 times faster. Plate loading also requires a lorry or similar as an abutment. Correlation between Loadman 132 and static plate loading is good; correlation coefficient is ca 0.90. Loadman is a Finnish design and is widely used in Finland. It has been sold to UK, Sweden, etc. Measurements on the roadbase with Loadman 132 are fully comparable with static plate loading tests. The bearing strength ratio cannot however be measured in the same way, although the equipment can be used to check bearing strength and compaction in DCM contracts.
