AN INVENTORY OF MEASUREMENTS OF DRIVING PATTERNS AT TRAFFIC SIGNAL CONTROLLED JUNCTIONS

INVENTERING AV KOERFOERLOPP I SIGNALREGLERADE TAETORTSKORSNINGAR

Introducing RTI is expected to affect exhaust discharge through influencing driving patterns. An inventory of measurements taken of driving patterns at intersections regulated by traffic lights in densely populated areas is presented. The aim of the inventory, which was limited to major intersections having speed limits of 50 km/h, was to study driving patterns there under present conditions. A large number of companies and other organizations were asked by letter or by phone whether they had conducted some form of measurements of driving patterns, and whether any results they had could be made available to the project. The results of three such investigations were seen as applicable. These comprised measurements involving a total of some 2300 cases of vehicles passing through intersections regulated by traffic lights. The results were analysed in terms of speed in approaching the intersection, and duration of stopping. An analysis was made for each vehicle on how its speed was affected by passage through the intersection. The relative number of passages through the intersection that were disturbed, that were undisturbed and that involved stopping were determined for different types of intersections. The types of intersections considered were defined in terms of background variables that were registered. Examples are given on how some of the results can be interpreted. Final conclusions are difficult to draw. Rather, the results might be viewed as representing case studies and the inventory as constituting a first step towards gaining a better understanding of the driving patterns of vehicles through intersections regulated by traffic lights in densely populated areas.
