BENTONITE TUNNELLER: DIGGING FOR BRITAIN

A description is given of the use of bentonite to stabilize the tunnel face during driving while preventing water ingress, a method which presents possibilities for tunnelling through previously prohibited terrain. The article describes in particular the application of this method to phase one of the Acton grange outfall sewer for the Warrington development corporation. An account is given of the problems encountered, such as excessive roll of the machinery, and the techniques used to overcome them so that an eventual rate of 6.7 metres in a 10 hour shift was reached. /TRRL/
