YOUNG DRIVERS, THE RELATION BETWEEN LIFESTYLE, MOTIVATION AND DRIVING BEHAVIOR

Many different factors contribute to young drivers' driving behavior and to their accident involvement. These factors may be structured into three groups, the learning process, individual aspects and social aspects. The purpose of this study was to investigate one link in this structure, the relation between lifestyle, motives and behavior. This was carried out through a questionnaire study of young drivers aged 20 years. They reported their lifestyle, the importance of different motives related to driving, and differing aspects of driving behavior and driving style. A factor analysis was used to reduce the data, and 16 aspects of lifestyle were identified which describe activities and interest in politics, sports, parties, music, literature, film, clothes, drugs, etc. Data on motives were grouped into 4 different types which may be described as safety, social norm, adventure and transport motives. In a similar way, driving style data were reduced to 5 types which may be described as reckless, calm/mature, careful/tense, unaware/careless and patient/tolerant.
