NEW DIRECTIONS FOR RAILROAD TERMINAL CONTROL

The author notes that yard managers have to better manage the processes within the railroad terminal. He provides benchmarks on terminal performance based on various studies going back 20 years. He surmises that, with better understanding of the terminals, better control over performance, and over what can be done, and better support for planning at all levels - from the day-to-day tactical details to the planning for next week or planning for capital budgeting over the next 20 years - better terminal performance can be achieved.
