INTEGRATING SOUTHERN AFRICA'S TRANSPORT: A PRESENTATION TO TRANSPORT RESEARCH FORUM
This paper describes a public enterprise and sole owner of the rail infrastructure in South Africa, called Transnet Limited. It consists of 26 divisions, business units and affiliated companies. The paper discusses the history of Transnet, its past involvement in Africa, and its current role in Southern Africa. The distribution and logistics division of Transnet, PX, is described. The division is operational in eight countries in Southern Africa. These include Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, and Swaziland. PX conveys small, high value items through a multi-modal system. It has the capability and will provide the future intermodal requirements within Transnet.
