FUTURE USE OF COMPLEMENTING TECHNOLOGIES FOR GIS

This paper describes a number of existing and emerging technologies that will be advantageous to the state Department of Transportation (DOT) community. The technological areas of discussion in the paper are hardware computing environment, software computing environment, data collection systems, image based mapping systems, printers, plotters, and film recorders, and geographic information management systems. Data collection for geographic information systems (GIS) by DOTs will increasingly use a range of remote sensing imagery. Digital Image Processing (DIPS) techniques are becoming directly integrated with digital image photogrammetric capabilities. New processes like spatial data used in relational database management, and products using 3-D perspective views of geography areas are possible and practical to use on a regular basis.
