VIRGINIA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (VDOT) GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM STRATEGIC PLAN

This paper describes a 14 month project that the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) engaged in, to devise a geographic information system (GIS) plan for their agency. The Final Report for the project covers all the requirements, technology, organization, schedule, costs, data interfaces, and related issues for implementing GIS within VDOT over the next 10 years. The sections of the report include surveys and interviews, application needs, existing and planned computing environment, conceptual framework, GIS compatibility and data sharing, organizational and staffing needs, strategic trends analysis, potential GIS applications efficiency and effectiveness, and an implementation plan for GIS.
