Pavement management systems have provided valuable information on deterioration to officials concerned with pavement performance. In Oakland, California, a pavement management system helped the city collect funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for road damage inflicted by heavy vehicles during reconstruction after a major a fire. At O'Hare International Airport, a pavement management system is used routinely to prioritize runway repair work and to monitor pavements to generate deterioration data for models that predict future conditions. Also, two states, California and Massachusetts, are using pavement management systems to institute pavement performance programs and to establish and meet pavement quality objectives. This article highlights the value of pavement management systems.
