DESIGN MANUFACTURE AND PERFORMANCE OF A LATERAL STRAIN DEVICE

A lateral strain device capable of measuring directly lateral deformations has been developed. It is claimed to be durable, sensitive and simple to operate. The device is basically a spring stainless steel strip, bent to fit the diameter of the sample. This strip has excellent elastic properties. After the required shape had been formed the ends of the strip were spot welded and it was then heat treated and left in the oven to cool, thus forming an elastic belt of permanent shape. Four strain gauges were mounted on the strip, two in compression, two in tension and were connected electrically to act as a full bridge configuration. Upon calibration each device produced a linear relationship between readout and diameter change and no creep or temperature effects were observed. /TRRL/
