NSRP STUDIES POWER TOOL CLEANING FOR SHIP CONSTRUCTION

According to a final research report issued by the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP), power tool cleaning methods offer an alternative to abrasive blasting for secondary surface preparation during ship construction. The study undertaken had three goals: 1) to review state-of-the-art in power tool cleaning methods; 2) to evaluate power tool-cleaned surfaces and their effect on the performance and durability of protective coating systems for ships; and 3) to compare the ship production costs of power tool cleaning and abrasive blasting. This article highlights parts of the final report, including current methods of power tool cleaning, applying power tool cleaning to the block construction process, testing coating performance over power tool cleaning, and comparing construction costs. General findings of the study are reported also.
