PERFORMANCE-BASED BINDER SPECIFICATIONS AS PROPOSED BY SHRP -- THEIR RELEVANCE TO CEECS

The 5-year, $150 million Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) targeted four critical highway research areas: long-term pavement performance; asphalt; concrete and structures; and highway maintenance. Its goal was the development of usable products that would materially improve applied technology in these four broad areas. In the SHRP asphalt research program, the principal product of the research was the SUPERPAVE(tm) mix design system. SUPERPAVE(tm) is a complete, comprehensive means for the design of paving mixes tailored to the unique performance requirements dictated by the traffic, climate and structural section at the pavement site. It facilitates the selection and combination of asphalt binder, aggregate, and where necessary, modifier to achieve the required level of pavement performance. It includes new specifications for asphalt binders, aggregates and paving mixes; new test methods, practices, and equipment for characterization of asphalt binders and paving mixes; and computer software that integrates and guides the use of the entire system.
