THE ROAD TO PEACE? FIGHTING THE TRANS-ISRAEL HIGHWAY

Unfortunately, Israel is in the process of heading toward mass motorization and highway construction. A critical decision in this direction has been made with the recent approval of the massive Trans-Israel highway. Some 300 kilometers long, with 4 lanes in each direction, it will span the length of the country. The Highway's route passes through the area of roughly 75 settlements, creating acute severance problems. Its route, just west of the "Green Line" separating Israel from the occupied territories, will also cut Jewish settlements off from those to the west, and Arab villages off from others to the east. While planning for the project is far advanced, opposition to the project is growing.
