SIMULATION OF A GRID-LIKE RAIL NETWORK

This paper describes the development of a dynamic simulator of a complex, grid-like rail network. The work was undertaken to provide the industry served by the network with a tool for testing "what-if" scenarios regarding the supply and distribution of railcars. Because of the rather unique network topology and operating policies, a number of interesting modeling problems were encountered and solved. A "user-friendly" feature of the resultant tool enables its use by industry personnel who have very little knowledge of simulation programming.
