AFTES RECOMMENDATIONS ON FIBRE-REINFORCED SPRAYED CONCRETE TECHNOLOGY AND PRACTICE

These recommendations, published by AFTES in 1994, supplement the AFTES recommendations on sprayed concrete technology and practice, published in 1993. They concern only the technological aspects of metallic fibre-reinforced sprayed concrete (FRSC), because the dimensional aspects of a sprayed concrete shell are being studied by AFTES Working Group No. 20. The recommendations cover: (1) statement of problem and definitions; (2) principles and equipment for the dry-mix and wet-mix processes of concrete spraying; (3) the materials used, namely aggregates, cement, water, metallic fibres, admixtures, and additives; (4) the characteristics of fresh and hardened concrete; (5) the design and suitability trials; (6) the preparation of the substrate; (7) the manufacture and transport of sprayed concrete; (8) spraying; (9) quality control; (10) sampling number and frequency - test schedule; and (11) the hygiene and safety plan. Quality control includes tests of the intrinsic quality of sprayed concrete, puncture-flexure, bonding, and evaluation of uniformity. The characteristics, sampling method, and conservation of samples in the suitability trials and quality control tests are described. Relevant standards as of 30 September 1994 are listed.
