The paper presents the viewpoint on Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) of a transport consultant actively involved in helping to promote the ITS industry in the UK. It has been shown that ITS offers real solutions to real problems. For example, ITS can (1) help to manage demand; (2) help to manage the road network; (3) reduce congestion and delays on roads; (4) improve safety; (5) reduce pollution; (6) improve the efficiency and competitiveness of transport operations; (7) encourage appropriate modal shifts; and (8) keep travellers well informed. ITS can provide disincentives needed to manage traffic demand and incentives needed to sustain mobility. Preliminary results suggest that ITS systems can benefit the community, and that it will bring sufficient time savings to justify public expenditure in comparison with other road and traffic schemes. There are major opportunities for selling British ITS expertise into leading world markets, but some central guidance is needed to realise the full potential of ITS in the UK. The UK Government can help to establish the first priority, the creation of a home market for ITS.
