SPRAYED CONCRETE LININGS (NATM) FOR TUNNELS IN SOFT GROUND

The guide has been produced in response to public concern over the use of NATM in soft ground in urban areas. The NATM design and construction principles are examined with specific reference to London Clay. It is intended to supplement and enhance existing authoritative and competent guidance documents prepared by key organisations. Definition, design and construction are separated in the guide which also addresses risk management and contractual arrangements. The importance of the complete integration of all these aspects in the use of sprayed concrete for initial support is emphasised. It is suggested that much of the confusion over NATM would be avoided if the description sprayed concrete lining is used, particularly for soft ground applications. Checklists are given to act as an aide-memoire on major aspects and the references listed provide more detailed guidance.
