This article describes the connections that French National Railways (SNCF) is developing between its centralised SOCRATE system and the main travel Global Distribution Systems (GDS). SOCRATE is the reservation system that SNCF introduced in 1992, to distribute railway products in SNCF stations and 2200 approved travel agencies in France. It consists of central software and a range of user interfaces. The GDS is a computerised reservation system for transport and leisure services, made available to travel agencies to enable them to sell these services. SNCF is continually aiming to improve its product distribution via travel agencies, so that it can better meet its present requirements and anticipate future requirements.
